The end is in sight for an effort that’s been months in the making — and years in planning — to move the Friends of the Marathon County Public Library into a new space.
More than a dozen volunteers who work with the Friends of the Library spent the last several months moving thousands of books, audiobooks, movies, and other materials from the 3rd floor of the Wausau location to its new home on the ground level, located on the west side of the building and facing the river.
While moving all of the existing materials, the Friends also still sift through items recently donated to the library to add to the collection.
They will celebrate the move and welcome the public into the new space with their first sale, February 1–4, 2018.
The move was a daunting task… filling box after box with books and other materials, loading them onto carts, and hauling them down to the new space (or, rather, letting the library’s elevator carry everything and everybody down). But it also was a positive step for the Friends because the new space will be more accessible than the 3rd-floor space — with its own entrance door off the lower parking lot, as well as elevator access.
Friends volunteers initially questioned whether all of the materials would fit in the new space, which is physically smaller than the cavernous 3rd-floor space. But with tall shelves and other display stands, they’ve found they have plenty of room.
Gail Cain, President of the Friends group, said all of the initial concerns and what-ifs are gone, replaced by happiness and pride.
“We are thrilled with the area that was constructed just for the Friends, which is a vast improvement over the previous space. Although the area will probably need tweaking as we go along, we are proud to present it to the public at our first book sale in February.”
The sale begins Thursday, February 1, 2018, at 5 p.m. with a special preview sale for members of the Friends group. (If you’re not a member, you can join on the spot or anytime!)
The sale is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, February 2–3, and concludes with our always-popular $6 bag sale from 1–4 p.m. on Sunday, February 4.
All proceeds from the sale go back to the library to help fund educational programs and more. Come take advantage of some great deals at the library… and consider becoming a Friend of the Marathon County Public Library, too!
We hope to see you there!
